In this "irresistible, immersive, and completely unputdownable" (Ellery Lloyd, New York Times bestselling author) debut novel, a former antique hunter investigates a suspicious death at an isolated English manor, embroiling her in the high-stakes world of tracking stolen artifacts.
What antique would you kill for?
Freya Lockwood is shocked when she learns that Arthur Crockleford, antiques dealer and her estranged mentor, has died under mysterious circumstances. She has spent the last twenty years avoiding her quaint English hometown, but when she receives a letter from Arthur asking her to investigate—sent just days before his death—Freya has no choice but to return to a life she had sworn to leave behind.
Joining forces with her eccentric Aunt Carole, Freya follows clues to an old manor house for an advertised antiques enthusiast's weekend. But not all is as it seems. It's clear to Freya that the antiques are all just poor reproductions, and her fellow guests are secretive and menacing. What is going on at this estate and how was Arthur involved? More importantly, can Freya and Carole discover the truth before the killer strikes again?

Emilia Fox's stylish narration brings Freya and her eccentric Aunt Carol to life as they set out to discover the truth behind the death of their old friend and mentor, Arthur. Their adventure escalates as they find themselves sharing an English manor house with some shady individuals. Fox creates believable characters in both the protagonists, injecting just the right amount of dottiness into Aunt Carol and allowing Freya's personality to develop as her self-confidence returns. Fox rises to the challenge of characterizing a wide range of diverse and sometimes larger-than-life characters. Her timing is spot-on, keeping the plot moving during some of the descriptive passages, resulting in an engaging listen. K.J.P. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine -

Decades prior, antiques investigator Freya Lockwood lost nearly everything because of her mentor, Arthur Crockleford. Now a divorced empty-nester about to lose her home, one of the few things she can hold fast to is her anger at him. When he dies unexpectedly, a riddle in his unwanted last letter propels Freya back into the world of antiques, the black market, and murder. Together with her Aunt Carole, whose cleverness is often overlooked because of her theatrical air and love of dramatic entrances, she'll follow Arthur's clues to a great treasure. But no one is who they seem, giving narrator Emilia Fox ample opportunity to show off the subtleties of her vocal skills. A character's accent and manner of speaking might change, but they remain recognizably the same person. Meanwhile, the strength of Freya's voice grows as she rediscovers the self-confidence hiding beneath her muffling blanket of grief. VERDICT Miller's debut is a delightful adventure mystery for lovers of expert, emotionally layered protagonists with a bit of humor, from Allison Montclair's Sparks and Bainbridge to Elizabeth Peters's Vicky Bliss.--Matthew Galloway
